GOOD FOOD AND GREAT SERVICE
Popular with both museum visitors and local residents, The Duchess Jean Tea Room offers quality fresh food in a bright, airy and relaxed environment.
We offer daily specials including our famed Homecooked Soup and Scones. Our lunch menu is available between 11:30am and 2:30pm serving a range of sandwiches, paninis, baked potatoes, quiche and salads. For our younger visitors we have our Bydandy Children’s Menu.
Table service from our friendly volunteers has been a proud tradition at The Duchess Jean Tea Room since we opened in 1997. It is one that we continue to this day much to the appreciation and delight of our regular customers.
We understand that nuts and other agents can cause allergic reaction and these may be used in the preparation of our food. If you have a concern please ask a member of staff.
We are pleased to be able to offer a range of Gluten and Dairy free products.

DUCHESS JEAN OF GORDON
Alexander, 4th Duke of Gordon, had received permission to raise a Regiment in 1794 to fight against the French during the French revolutionary wars. Recruiting proved difficult, however his wife Duchess Jean (Jane) Maxwell came to the rescue.
A very beautiful lady with grace, charm and lively personality, she decided to visit the country fairs, markets and small towns in the North and North East of Scotland with her three beautiful daughters. She undoubtedly affected recruiting for the better, offering not only the King’s Shilling, but also a kiss – though how many were kissed is not known! It is said the Regiment was then raised in very quick time.
The Tea Room is named in honour of Duchess Jean. We are pleased to have a number of items relating to Duchess Jean in the Museum’s collection, some of which you can see below.
